My artworks are a
personal narrative about imperfection. I appreciate what is
overlooked. The deficiencies and flaws in the materials give the art
character and interest. I find that imperfection is the essence of
true beauty. It wasn’t always this way. In the past, I strived
for perfection and found that it wasn’t possible. I had to learn
that I am human and not perfect. Nothing is perfect. Once I came to
this realization, I gave myself permission to create in a more fluid,
free, and experimental manner.
My work is
spontaneous and influenced by discarded or found objects, as these
hold a history of another time and place. Working in collage, I
create a fictional narrative of a slower, more relaxed past. They
are about a time when neighbors socialized and long distance
communication was done through letter writing. These old letters
appear in my work and add another layer of meaning to the art. The
history of the objects tell the story of memories about bygone days.
In addition, numbers, words, or parts of words are an important
component. I often incorporate these into my work in a casual
relationship by using them as a design aspect. They create an
imperfect and distorted pattern to the work. When the work is
complete, I give the artwork a title which helps the viewer to
understand the narration of each piece. All artworks appearing within this website are the
